FIG. 02 — foam-in-place cradle
What goes into an export crate
A crate is a small piece of engineering. It gets lifted by forklifts, stacked by people who've never seen it, and opened by a customs officer with a pry bar. Here's what we put in so it survives all three.
Inside a standard export crate
| Part | Why it’s there |
|---|---|
| ISPM-15 heat-treated lumber | Required for wood packaging by most countries' import rules. Stamped on the timber. |
| Skid runners | So a forklift or pallet jack can get under it from the right side. |
| Blocking and bracing | Stops the item shifting when the crate tilts or brakes hard. |
| Foam or a shaped cradle | Takes the shock. Shaped to the item, not stuffed around it. |
| Moisture barrier | Containers sweat on ocean crossings. Wood and steel don't like it. |
| Handling marks | This way up, fragile, lift here. Stenciled on, not taped on. |
| Packing list pocket | So whoever opens it knows what's inside without digging. |
Three sizes, priced

- Medium, 20–60 cu ftfrom $520

Three shipments, itemized
What a quote from us actually lists. Unit prices are the published ones; anything we can't price until we see the details says so.
A sideboard and a mirror, Boston to Hamburg
An antique sideboard and a large wall mirror leaving a house in Boston. Both get crated, because a mirror in a blanket is a gamble.
- Packing labor, 2 packers$68/hour each, 2-hour minimum
- Medium crate for the sideboard (20–60 cu ft)from $520
- Standard crate for the mirror (up to 20 cu ft)from $295
- Cargo insurance, optionalfrom 0.45% of insured value, minimum $65
Show all line items
- Ocean freight, US to Europe, shared containerpriced on request
We don't publish a US-to-Europe LCL rate, so that line comes as a written price once we know the crate sizes.
Example scenario
A seller's first sea shipment. Cartons go LCL, clear customs, land at a partner warehouse, get FNSKU labels and go out to Amazon.
Destination CFS charges, duties and fees, and the delivery from port to warehouse come on top and are quoted separately.
180 kg of spare parts, Frankfurt to Chicago by air
Four cartons, 80 × 60 × 60 cm each. They weigh 180 kg, but the airline charges for the space: 4 × (80 × 60 × 60 ÷ 6,000) = 192 kg.
- Air, Europe to US, standard192 kg × $4.20 = $806.40
- Customs entry, up to 3 HTS lines$165
192 kg is the number that gets billed, not 180. That's chargeable weight.
